INFO-I590: Prototyping with Arduino Tools (2024)
Designer:
Lingchuan Zhou
Swirler is an interactive light designed to harmonize breathing patterns with visual feedback. The device integrates dynamic light effects and respiration-controlled motion through morphing Kirigami patterns. It combines the principles of mindful breathing exercises with the captivating beauty of mechanical transformations to promote relaxation and focus.
Features
Breath-Controlled Interaction:
Swirler responds to your breathing rhythm, guiding you through inhalation and exhalation with a calming light sequence.
Light Indicators:
Gradual white light indicates inhalation, while a soft blue light guides exhalation, creating a soothing and immersive breathing experience.
Morphing Visualization:
A unique Kirigami pattern tensely rotates inward during inhalation and gracefully returns to its original form during exhalation, symbolizing the natural flow of breath.
How to use Swirler:
Inhale:
Follow the gradual lighting-up pink light
Take a deep breath
Enjoy the pattern changing
Exhale:
Switch to following the gentle blue light
Release your breath
See the kirigami pattern recovering
Iterations
Prototype 1 (left),
Prototype 2 (middle),
Final design (right)

Prototype 1 - Pattern test
1 pair of gears, Paper with identical cuts
Prototype 2 - Sensors & Code test
Micropressure sensor for pressure trigger+
Servo motor for gear movement (Arduino IDE)

Final design
This final design combined one micropressure sensor, one servo motor, 4 gears, 34 neopixel lights and 1 button.
The product was shelled in an assembled 3D printed components and parchment paper patterns.
